Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, has announced that no major breakthroughs in artificial intelligence should be expected in 2025. According to him, all the ‘low-hanging fruit’ has already been picked, and further progress will require much more time and effort. This information confirms earlier leaks from Google, OpenAI and Anthropic employees, who suggested that new AI models are not yet meeting expectations. Does this mean that we are facing a period of stagnation in this dynamic industry?

The issue of naming artificial intelligence models seems to be surprisingly important. Unlike products such as smartphones or cars, where the numbering of successive versions is clear, AI model names can be chaotic. For example, we may encounter names such as ‘New Sonet 3.5’ or ‘Gemini 1.5’, which do not clearly indicate their hierarchy or technological advancement. This is due to the unique process of model creation: they are trained, improved, and sometimes released in different versions that do not necessarily reflect the linear evolution of technology.
One of the latest developments in artificial intelligence is the Gencast model, developed by DeepMind, a subsidiary of Google. Gencast is revolutionary in many ways:
Google plans to integrate Gencast with Google Maps, which could significantly improve daily access to accurate weather forecasts.

One of the interesting issues raised by experts is the ‘character’ of AI models. Each model is trained according to a specific set of values and design decisions that influence how it responds. An example of this is AI's approach to medical issues – should the model encourage the user to trust the doctor, or provide arguments to support the patient's own concerns?
Amanda Askell of Anthropic, responsible for the development of the Claude model, emphasises the importance of these decisions, which affect billions of interactions with users around the world. Ultimately, the nature of AI reflects the values and beliefs of the people and organisations that create it.

Finally, it is worth mentioning initiatives on the Polish home front. The announcement of the creation of the Artificial Intelligence Fund, whose resources are to be allocated to the development of a Polish AI model, is a promising step forward. Local models can better take into account cultural specifics and national values, making them more relevant to local users.

1. Will the development of AI really slow down?
Experts say that further progress will require more time and resources, but this does not mean the end of innovation.
2. Why do AI models have such strange names?
The model names reflect the complex process of their creation and improvement, which does not always proceed in a linear fashion.
3. What distinguishes the Gencast model from DeepMind?
It is faster, more accurate and uses advanced diffusion network technology, making it a breakthrough in weather forecasting.
