A lot is happening in the world of artificial intelligence technology lately. Unfortunately, not all innovations will be available to us as residents of the European Union.
Apple and Meta, two giant technology companies, have announced that they are withholding the introduction of some of their latest features in Europe. Why? Mainly due to concerns related to new EU regulations, such as the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Apple announced that some of their latest features, such as Apple Intelligence, iPhone Mirroring, and SharePlay Screen Sharing, will not enter the European market. These innovations could significantly make users' lives easier, but new EU regulations present challenges to the company that may prove too costly and complicated.

One of the key issues is the interoperability requirement, which forces Apple to allow its features to function not only on its own devices but also on competitors' hardware, such as computers running Windows or Linux. For Apple, which builds its strength on consistency and a closed ecosystem, this is a difficult situation that could negatively affect the user experience.
The Digital Markets Act (DMA) is a set of regulations aimed at increasing competition in the digital market. This includes, among other things, a ban on large tech companies favoring their own services and the necessity to ensure interoperability. For companies like Apple or Meta, this means the need to introduce changes that are not always profitable or easy to implement.

Meta, like Apple, also announced that its latest artificial intelligence models, such as LLaMa, will not be available in Europe. The company fears that legal instability and potential penalties resulting from non-compliance with the new regulations may be too great a risk.
How different countries approach the regulation of artificial intelligence shows that there is no single, universal approach. In the United States, companies have more freedom, allowing for the faster introduction of innovations to the market.
On the other hand, in China, regulations are very restrictive—every AI model must be certified by state officials, which significantly limits the possibilities for innovation.
Fortunately, not all technological novelties are out of our reach. Meta has introduced a new version of its image segmentation model—SAM 2. This tool allows for the precise recognition of objects in photos and videos, operates faster and more efficiently than its predecessor, and—most importantly—is available to users in Europe.

SAM 2 will find applications in many fields, from analyzing CCTV camera footage to advanced video applications. Meta has released this model under the Apache 2 license, which means it can be freely used in commercial projects.
One of the more interesting novelties is also a tool called Aider, which is designed to help developers create software. Aider analyzes source code, identifies dependencies between files, and proposes changes to the project. It is a tool that may prove invaluable, especially in large projects where managing code can be complicated.

Thanks to Aider, it is possible to quickly create applications and modify existing projects while taking file dependencies into account. This is a useful tool not only for advanced programmers but also for those who are just beginning their adventure with coding.
